Blog #7: Service Learning
I am choosing to write this blog using Josh’s blog post . I thought he did a great job explaining the two different service learning project approaches. Josh makes the argument, “ I can't help but wonder if anything is really accomplished by the service learning project if the students aren't required to be involved in the community and developing actual relationships with those in need.” I couldn’t agree more. I think that Ms. Adams approach is appropriate for the restrictions of teaching a seventh grade classroom. The kids cannot go into the community to give service to the ones in need due to a lack of transportation. Having people come and talk to the students is a great idea to make up for their lack of communication with the community. However, I do not think it is as successful as Mr. Johnson’s approach. Mr. Johnson has his students working hand and hand in the community. They are able to build relationships with all sorts of people and learn through those relationships...
